Many people have made the switch to Non-GMO food products due to the potential health risks of eating GMO foods. Chemicals and pesticides that can be harmful to the body are sprayed on GMO crops and are also used in skin care. If you are wondering whether you should use Non-GMO skin care products, keep reading!

What are GMOS?

GMOs or genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have had their genes artificially altered to change their characteristics in a laboratory through genetic engineering GMOs can be plants, animals, and microorganisms. This genetic modification creates various combinations of animal, plant, virus genes and bacteria that do not occur in nature and are not found through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Why are GMOs used?

Farmers and agricultural companies select GMO seeds that work best for their farm’s needs, helps them save money and can deter insects from attacking their vegetables. Usually, genetic modification involves removing DNA that encodes a single gene from one organism and placing it into the same organism after modification of its main function. Typically, genetic modification is used to improve the characteristic of the organism. Some of the first GMOS used in skincare and cosmetics were plant derived. GMOs are commonly used in cosmetics and skin care to produce higher levels of certain ingredients. For instance, canola is often changed to make elevated levels of lauric acid which is a key ingredient in many soaps.

Why do we avoid GMOs

According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine or AAEM, numerous studies on animals have shown potentially serious health risks associated with consuming genetically modified foods, including immune problems, accelerated signs of aging, infertility, insulin regulation, and changes in the spleen, kidney, liver, and digestive system. In the United States, GMO labeling is not a requirement. Meaning the food and beauty products you purchase can contain GMOS without you knowing.
